Problem: Every completing medical student must write a personal explanation for the electronic residence application service (EFS), but there are no widely available resources that support the writing process, which leads to the letter under the applicants..
Approach: The authors offered every medical college from Wisconsin Senior Student in class 2014 and 2015 a voluntary, self-contained, two-hour Residency Application Application Personal Statement Writers Workshop. The meeting included the selection of the write requests, speedwriting and a peer-edit criticism. The data was collected before and after each workshop and at the time of the ERAS.
Results: One hundred new nunchers were chosen to participate.Of the 96 participants, which conclude a prehop questionnaire, only 28 (29%) were comfortable with creative and reflective writing. Five-five students have completed a follow-up survey after submitting their EFS application. Five-six (94%) found the session that is effective to learn their personal explanation, and 65 (70%) were surprised by the quality of their writing. Almost everyone could pursue some of their final explanation to the workshop. Found forty-five (85%), which work with other students helpful, and 49 (91%) would recommend the meeting for future students; 47 (87%) agreed that the workshop is "fun".
Next steps: The full workshop is repeated annually. Workshops are also offered residents who prepare fellowship applications. A shorter version (without peer-edit criticism) was successfully used with the total class of 2016 to help them think of their initial clinical encounters. The authors are looking for other ways to improve the reflection of students, residents and faculty with these techniques.
