Writing for research
25th September 2016 В· 9 min read
Here is a deliberately brief summary of the instructions that some folk have found useful:
There two main models for structuring an academic paper: 1. The conventional model; and 2. the design model. Which method you use is important to properly set it and plan your paper before. You can also find it useful for C tail tips in my post on Storyboarding Research.
The consulting instructions for this section All draw on thomas bassbolls blog . he suggests
One paper should have 40 paragraphs arranged in eight-level sections:
В· Five paragraphs for introduction and background
ESTA B Lishes motivation and reading interest
В· Five paragraphs of theory - on the empirics they present, are brought to the empiricia and concentrated that they are present
В· Five paragraphs of the literature review. do not make this section too long!
В· В· Five paragraphs of the methods. This section tends to be ultraconventional in many papers. Think about what details readers need to know: Do not put anymore, even less. People tend to really think about methods when they see the data - it is important to be sufficient to mention how data was obtained.
В· About 40% of the text of your paper should cover results . That would mean 15 paragraphs, possibly divided into two or three parts, z. B. Data Commitment, Analysis 1, Analysis 2
Do not assume that information about the data or its interpretation is obvious - discuss results. You need at least 5 paragraphs discussing the results.
В· В· Five paragraphs of implications. these can be theoretically and practical - one per paragraph?
В· Overall folding - At the beginning of this section, you reflect the last paragraph of your introduction , but now the questions you have not asked to ask you. Later in the conclusion you open the research questions of the next stage.
The beginning and the end of the papers are the hardest to write. Ideas at the beginning and in the end frame, which needs to be said. The beginning must build a similarity between you and the reader. Do not underestimate the resistance of the readers against new work: Establish the interest of the readers (if they can) in the first paragraph.
This Council is based on an article of 8,000 words. If your article must be shorter, reduce the number of paragraphs pro rata.
The focus here is on positive tightening of reader for reading, remember and quote your paper. There is a myth, the "90% of the papers published in academic magazines never quotes ...". "In fact, unknowledged papers are published in academic magazines, 12% in medicine, 27% in natural sciences, 32% in the social sciences of social sciences and 82% in the humanities.
In the meantime, do not draw elite magazines more Google scholar quotes - like this graphic shows that people are increasingly what they want to look for online. You do not only reduce the top 10 magazines in your field.

Both factors mean that it is worthwhile to write the best designed and accessible paper you can.
Designed sequences are in a strong contrast to "given structures", as the MEACHANIST or conventional approaches discussed above. It is particularly helpful to avoid structures that are only a "recording of the work" or the pure conventional structure that is still used in technical disciplines. Three basic designs are feasible:
1. The focus-down model. Perhaps 90% of the work still uses the focus-down model.
2.The opening model (useful in the physical sciences)
3. The compromise model
These models are very different if long the readers have to wait before reaching 'core' material - the most original or most valuable evidence or components. You must decide what the core is from the standpoint of a reader. The core speaks of new findings or show independent critical power.
This model has a long literature test and fast (usually too fast). The focus often seems to be on the literature here.
This model uses a very fast setup to move directly into the core. It can be hard to do that well. Some traditionalists in the disciplines of the humanities and the social sciences do not like it - because there is inadequate literature / ancestors.
This approach starts with attention, motivating readers to motivate readers and give a short, recent literature coverage. It is then continued to maintain the attention of the readers by a quick transition to the core (original or value creation points). Good award is a must. And there is enough space for a thorough analysis of knowledge, and a discussion on how to relate to literature / previous findings.
All bits of your paper must match - in an "industrial force" mode in which each bit supports the whole. To check this, isolate the parts below and see how they complement and reinforce (but repeat or contradict).
Make the title really closely with what you experience or announce as conclusions. Put the story in the title. Check the following example:
